January Mixer - Riding Safe Amidst “Ghost-Plated” Drivers
As cyclists, we are vulnerable to harm from unaccountable, aggressive drivers hidden by the “veil of anonymity” posed by tinted windows, out-of-state registrations and fraudulent or defaced license plates. Last month, NYCC member Geoff Radbill was only the most recent cyclist killed by a habitually reckless driver who was apparently hidden by this veil. But a just-released, groundbreaking report from the NYC DoT (entitled "The Rise in Reckless Driving 2020-2023") points the way to piercing the veil of driver anonymity, and holding killer drivers accountable.
NYCC ride leader and noted bike lawyer Steve Vaccaro, who represents Geoff Radbill's estate and is investigating the heartbreaking fatal crash, will give a presentation on the dramatic uptick in aggressive and hit-and-run driving perpetrated by drivers hiding behind the veil of anonymity, and approaches to unmasking these drivers and holding them accountable. Steve will also address the similar problem of identification and accountability that can arise when cyclists are struck by others traveling on two wheels. Steve will also cover the basics of what to do in a crash, how to avoid one, and what every cyclist needs to know about insurance. Join us at Connelly's on January 13 for the presentation. Doors open at 6:00, presentation begins at 6:30.
Date: Jan 13, 6pm
